The Civic Learning Award for public schools is co-sponsored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson and California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye. It recognizes and value the important role of public schools in preparing students for participation in our democracy. The awards are designed to both celebrate successful efforts to engage students in civic learning and to identify successful models that can be replicated in other schools.
"This award recognizes the important work Roosevelt Elementary students, teachers and their principal are doing to prepare our students to be fully-vested participants in our democracy," said CUSD Board President Satra Zurita. "But its important to know this is going on in all Compton schools. We believe in a complete education - and it's critical that our students understand their connection and responsibility to our community."
