But Chris’ path to college didn’t exactly start like he planned. First, challenges at home almost derailed any plans for college. Like too many CUSD students, Chris and his family were homeless for a time. Living out of their car it’s not surprising his grades plummeted – he says he probably dropped down to a 1.6.
But meeting another student from another district at Upward Bound changed everything.
Chris turned things around in school even getting involved in MESA and other STEAM programs. But his interest in math and engineering couldn’t compete with his desire to express himself creatively.
“I love the performing arts – I love that drama. So I thought, why not make money off of being me?”
His message to other students is simple:
“It’s never too late to turn things around. Do the best you can then do better than the best you can.”
